Have children in the 9-12 year old range? Here's what we recommend:
Step 1: Get the DTK
Download and administer DTK I (Diagnostic Test Kit for 4-8 year olds). These
tests are sent to your email address. They may be printed out or viewed on the computer.
Step 2: Take the Test
We do not want
to assume what your 9-12 year old knows or doesn't know, so we recommend starting on the very first test in the first book with the introduction, "This should be easy for you and will literally take
you one minute to do. Let's have some fun and see if you can get them all right!"
Note: Some parents, especially teachers, feel that they know their child's math abilities - and holes - very well,
and so they feel that they do not need to have their children take the tests; they feel they can just look at the activities and decide whether or not their children should do them.
We respectfully ask that you let our curriculum do its work!
You don't need a Ph.D. in math or education: Our team of educational, math, and child development experts has done all the work for you.
Step 3: Grade the Test
The DTK includes the answer guide. For each question missed, the answer guide will tell exactly which activity(ies) will fill the hole just identified in your child's math foundation. These activities
are designed to address visual, tactile, kinesthetic, auditory, and writing learning styles so each child will be reached regardless of learning style. Just jot these activity
numbers down, and then move on to the next test. When you've done all 12 twelve tests in the DTK, move on to Step 4.
Step 4: Fill the Holes
OK, now you should have a list of activities that will fill the holes identified from the tests. At this point there are three possibilities:
1) The student got all the questions right; there is no need to fill holes. Super! You are ready for Kit II. If you think your child is beyond Kit II, repeat Steps 1-3 for DTK II.
2) The student needs to do less than 150 activities. Well, there are some holes to fill, but you may fill them without purchasing Kit I. Just go to the
Download page and add the activities you need to the cart. If you don't have the
manipulatives you need, call us at 888-556-6284 and we'll set you up (requires minimum $50 purchase of activity downloads).
3) The student needs to do 150 activities or more. Simply put, this child has a lot of math holes that if not filled immediately will keep this child lagging behind for years: You need Kit I, which
may be ordered by
